One of the themes Lady Gaga keeps advancing in her work, and in interviews, is to respect your unique self.
“Through honoring your identity and really fighting for who you are every single day of your life, down to your core, you can have more faith and more hope in life and in the future.”
Her quotes remind me of these by dancer Martha Graham:
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.
“And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”

Lady Gaga (originally Stefani Germanotta) identifies herself as a feminist, and says,
“I find that men get away with saying a lot in this business, and that women get away with saying very little.
“In my opinion, women need and want someone to look up to that they feel have the full sense of who they are, and says, ‘I’m great.’ ”
She also sees herself as unique:
“I don’t see myself as ever being like anybody else. I don’t see myself as an heir.”
“When I say to you, there is nobody like me, and there never was, that is a statement I want every woman to feel and make about themselves.”
“I am focused on the work. I am constantly creating.”
Like many people, she has had challenging life experiences, such as being bullied – even thrown into a trash can.
She said, “I was called really horrible, profane names very loudly in front of huge crowds of people, and my schoolwork suffered at one point. I didn’t want to go to class. And I was a straight-A student, so there was a certain point in my high school years where I just couldn’t even focus on class because I was so embarrassed all the time. I was so ashamed of who I was.”

How important is self concept? One of the primary authors and coaches on it is psychologist Nathaniel Branden, who says: “The reputation you have with yourself – your self-esteem – is the single most important factor for a fulfilling life.”
