Jim - you are certainly not alone. And there are many possibilities for making a living for talented people - even beyond a "good enough job" working for someone else. See articles by Valerie Young, including You Don't Need A Job to Make a Living.

I have struggled with this for years, perhaps all of my adult life. I seem to have violated most of the guidelines you mention for choosing a "good enough" job. I went from physically taxing, dangerous physical labor jobs to soul crushing 55 hour a week high stress, little personal reward computer IT jobs (a series of failing companies, waves of layoffs, etc.) Both either left me physically or emotionally unavailable to my own creativity. Eventually I failed at IT at about the time that the high tech bubble burst, then 9-11 followed soon after, and I was suddenly unable to find a "good enough" job and started my own music business, which, while creativley satisfying, is completely impovershing, creating its own stress. Now, at age 55, with holes in my resume the size of a truck, too experienced and educated to take a sales counter job, and too unskilled (and probably youthful) to get another IT job, I seem hung between the two worlds. This article has helped me to identify what the matter is, and I thank you for it. Somewhere there has to be a "good enough" job for me that will allow me a creative life while not sucking the soul out of my chest...

How true! It's a fine between being too bored and being too challenged at work. I've come to that conclusion myself, that I will only be happy doing a combination of different things.

What is really a shame is that employers seem to gear the work environment in favor of non-HSPs, when the Highly Sensitive people are the ones who tend to be the most valuable employees.

We need to put all of those good qualities (contentiousness, caring, creativity, etc.)to work for someone who will really appreciate it: Ourselves!
