A timely, thoughtful post. I read it as I cooked dinner, listened to iTunes, and did some yoga (just kidding).

A strong body of research - including the UCLA study - now confirms that multi-tasking is less effective than serial-tasking. So why do we do it?

We need the stim. We're so conditioned to movieland car chases, quick edit TV ads, and virtual reality that ordinary life bores us. Stuck on the under-stimulated side of the upside-down U, multi-tasking adds the stim you need to get back to your focus zone.

"Mindful multi-tasking" - staying aware of your level of stim and adjusting it up or down as needed - will work: chatting while clearing your clutter, good; dwt (driving while texting) bad.
