Energy vampires can suck our life energy
Judith Orloff MD is an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and synthesizes traditional medicine, intuition, energy work and spirituality in her medical practice and publications.
We can all use protection
In her article Protect Yourself from Energy Vampires, she explains, “Energy vampires are people who suck our energy dry. Everyone can benefit from skills on how to cope with them.
“You can especially benefit if you are an ‘intuitive empath’ who absorbs the pain and negativity of others into your body, and become exhausted by it.”
She continues, “Our relationships are governed by a give and take of energy. Some people make us more electric or at ease. Yet others suck the life right out of us.
“With patients and in my workshops I’ve seen their fang marks and the carnage they’ve strewn. But most of us don’t know how to identify and cope with vampires, so we mope around as unwitting casualties, enduring a preventable fatigue.”
Varieties of vampires
She defines some types of energy vampires “to watch for at work and ways to deal with them,” including “The Sob Sister” – who “adores a captive audience. She’s the person with the ‘poor me’ attitude who’s more interested in complaining than solutions.”
Another type is the “Go For The Jugular Fiend” who “is vindictive and cuts you down with no consideration for your feelings. He says things like, ‘Forget that job. It’s out of your league.’ These jabs can be so hurtful it’s hard to get them out of your head.”
Who me?
In addition to dealing with others, Dr. Orloff cautions we should also look at ourselves.
In her article Am I An Emotional Vampire? How Do I Know?, she writes, “We’ve all got a smidgeon of vampire in us, especially when we’re stressed… These are some common indications that you’re becoming a drainer:
People avoid you or glaze over during a conversation
You’re self-obsessed
You’re often negative…”
Judith Orloff MD is author of a number of print and CD programs, including the book Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life.
In her post Dealing With Energy Vampires, Celestine Chua writes about some of her experience, and how challenging it can be to help others.
“All in all, the school was like a breeding ground of energy vampires. I was quite a positive person, so I would constantly try to uplift my friends around me with positivity.
“However, it was like trying to stand up and go against a huge tidal wave. I couldn’t make much headway in my goal to help them, because a lot of them chose to remain in their mode of thinking. It didn’t help that the teachers who were jaded would often offset whatever little progress or shift I did in their mindsets.”
