Speaking as an actor, I have found that the "edge" that I want for a performance comes not from anxiety or nervous tension, but from the adrenaline rush. I do want to be just a little nervous -- not out of fear, but out of anticipation. I don't want to be so overconfident that I make a mistake because I think I'm perfectly prepared; I don't want to be so relaxed that I'm not able to respond quickly "in the moment" if (or when!) something unexpected happens.

I'm a ball of energy backstage before a show -- I can't sit still; I can't hold a conversation. But the moment I walk on stage, I leave the rest of the world behind; I live in the world of the character, and nothing else matters. For me, there's no experience in the world like it.

One simple but effective solution for an overwhelmingly noisy environment: Earplugs! If you can't get away, they can greatly reduce the distraction level....sometimes a good temporary barrier is all I need to get my momentum going, and then I can tune out distractions easily...
