She Moved the Can of Shaving Cream

by Dan Robey

My wife moved a can of shaving cream and one of my positive habits disappeared!

Sounds pretty strange, right?

Here is a strange, but true story that can change your life... right now!

As many of you know, positive habits can be created with the help of habit triggers. What are habit triggers? Here is a definition from "The Power of Positive Habits" book.

Habit triggers -- External stimuli that help to trigger a habit action.

Habit triggers can be almost anything: a word, music, a time of day, eating, an object, even another positive habit.

OK, now that you know what a habit trigger is, let's get back to my very strange, yet powerful story.

You may recall a positive habit that I sent to you recently in one of my newsletters. It was the habit of combining showering with other daily personal hygiene activities to save time.

Here is a recap of that habit:

When you take a shower in the morning you can save time, and get to work early if you combine showering, with brushing/flossing your teeth, shaving (men), etc.

Just install a suction cup shelf in your shower and keep toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss, razor, shaving cream, and a small mirror on the shelf.

You will find that you will be ready for work a few minutes early every day. (OK, I got some heat from some people who said this habit wastes water, but most people usually run the water while brushing their teeth and shaving anyway. If you are concerned about this, install a reduced waterflow shower head)

Trust me, the really powerful part of this story is coming up... so keep reading!

OK, so I love this habit, and every morning I save time by combining these activities before going to work.

One day my wife decides that the place where I keep the shaving cream in my shower is not a such great place, so she moves it 12 inches higher up, on top of a soap dispenser. This is the amazing part of this story.

She only moved the shaving cream can 12 inches, can you guess what happened? For three days in a row, I found that I had gotten out of the shower without shaving!

Why had I forgotten to shave? Because the shaving can was my habit trigger, and when my lovely wife moved it just 12 inches away from where it was normally it was no longer in my direct view... my peripheral vision was obviously not picking it up as a habit trigger anymore.

Think about this for a moment. Our daily routines are so programmed into our minds that even our eye movement patterns become habitual! We can use this to our advantage.

How can this strange observation change your life.... right now?

Here are some examples:

1. You decided that you want to have more energy, lower cholesterol and a healthier heart. You add the positive habit of eating oatmeal each morning. Now, supercharge that habit with this new trigger.

Place a bottle of flax seed oil next to your box of oatmeal. ( You can get Flax seed oil in any Health Food store)

Now, when you eat your oatmeal in the morning for increased energy and lower cholesterol, take 2 tablespoons of Flax Seed oil. Flax seed oil provides you with the good fats you need (Omega 3, 6 and 9) for a healthy heart. The Flax Seed oil bottle will trigger this habit every morning. You see it....you do it!

2. You decide that you want to add walking to your daily routine. Place your walking shoes next to your front door. Your shoes will act as a visual trigger for you to put them on and start walking.

You see it...you do it!

3. You know ( from reading my book) that Selenium can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women by up to 50%. Place a bottle of Selenium capsules ( 200 mcg) next to your coffee maker.

The Selenium bottle will trigger you to take one capsule every morning when you have your coffee (or tea) and you will automatically reduce your risks for breast cancer and other cancers.

You get the picture now!
