The Ascent of Your Dreams

By Jenna Forrest

Suppose in your life, you have your very own inner call, your personal Mount Everest to climb.

At its pristine peak you might envision your own business, being a great parent, going to Tahiti for a winter, forgiving a spouse, or starting a church.

Its nagging sensation is always calling you. You feel it with great passion.

There is only one place to begin such a passionate climb -- at the daunting foot of the mountain.

It is where the distracting noise of the “real world” threatens to drown out your motivation to try something new.

Because your inner voice gets drowned out by the chitter chatter of everyone around you, you can begin to believe what others tell you -- that you’re stuck, that you’ll never be able to forgive your spouse, or that you’ll never earn enough money running your own business.

Some say that people who believe in something beyond what seems practical are dreamers. They roll their eyes at dreamers, focus on their failures, and spread the bad news after a person who attempts to climb his mountain slips and falls.

Seeing people tumble from their mountain reinforces their beliefs that the climb is not worthwhile. Those are the people who will never leave the distractions of the mountain base.

But not you. You stay away from the downers and you keep dreaming. You choose to live a life in action, daring to explore paths upward.

You can see only possibilities - countless paths for you to choose from — steep, smooth, rugged, crumbly, serene, sturdy, shaded, sunny, narrow, wide, worn, overgrown.

You don't wait for the perfect path to appear. You know that any path will lead you, the brave climber, closer to your summit.

Any challenge you face along the way will serve as helpful lessons about life and will stimulate character-defining questions, like “What can I overcome?” “What is my life purpose?” and “What drives me further?”

You definitely get tired, but you keep going anyway, huffing and puffing your way uphill toward your own peak. With determined focus, you find yourself surrounded more and more by believers and survivors - those who are strong of will and body and mind.

They energize you, and your step feels lighter. With time, you become rewarded with a better view of a world you couldn’t see from down below.

On the switchbacks of the ascent of your dreams, you stop to look back on how far you’ve come.

This is where you witness the peaceful expression of your faithful efforts. Your spirit is thanking you for wanting more — for trying so hard and for not giving in so easily.

At last you experience the silence, the stillness that lets you hear your heart speak.

And whether you realize it or not, this is the peak — its the place that warriors strive to find.

As you listen to your breath in the silence of the moment, you understand that this is what being human really means - standing in awe, grateful to have listened to your inner call.
