We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.

In times of anxiety and fear, we almost always call upon someone or something to help us get through our stress.

This dependency on others for strength not only weakens our soul, but also steals from it the possibility of being educated by the Extraordinary Life, which means we miss two major lessons.

First, the crucial lesson that all our fears are based upon false evidence that appears real.

With this revelation comes our second realization that the same frightened self that seeks rescue secretly confirms its imagined condition as being real each time it cries out for help.

Refusing to rescue ourselves from inner states that scare us invites the Extraordinary Life that shows us that no such scared self exists that needs saving.

Any transition serious enough to alter your definition of self will require not just small adjustments in your way of living and thinking but a full-on metamorphosis.

I have heard it said that living out of our vision is more powerful than living out of our circumstance. Holding on to a vision invokes the circumstances by which the vision is achieved. Vision is content; material circumstances mere form.

Once you get clear on what you want, do yourself a favor and put it in writing. That's what Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams did. Adams desperately wanted to escape his corporate cubicle to become a syndicated cartoonist.

To keep his goal front and center he wrote his goal not once, not twice, but 15 times -- a day!

Adams wasn't just engaging in wishful thinking. The guy backed up his goal with action.

Before heading off to his corporate cubicle, Adams would work on his cartoons from 5:00 to 7:00am until he had compiled enough to put in an envelope and send off to United Feature Syndicate.

The rest, as they say, is history. Today Adams is, in his words, "obscenely wealthy," doing exactly what he loves, and using his gifts to make millions of other corporate drones laugh at the absurdities of modern organizational life.

Now it hit me that any number of people in the audience for my talk had come to an open microphone and in some way spoken of their goals as if they were anything but real destinations they were going to reach.
Listen folks. Talking about goals won't get you there any more than going to church will get you to heaven. If you do not passionately believe in where you are going, don't give goal-setting a bad name by using the word goal to describe listless me too ism.

A goal has to be a real destination at which you not only aspire to arrive but for which you make every preparation and expend every effort.

Stop mimicking words. Stop using language without meaning it or knowing what you are saying. A goal is a destination.

The new year is the cultural icon for self-reflection. At what we've accomplished, and what still needs to be addressed; to reflect on what's working and what isn't. ...

We strive annually to "take stock" and to "feel better" this time next year.

In my experience, the most central feature for successful lifestyle change is to challenge the "feel good" paradox.

Specifically, that successful lifestyles must satisfy the same desires that brought about unhealthy lifestyles: it must feel good. ...

Learning to trust your own self-leadership, your own intuition, is essential to making you a happier person and more enjoyable to be around.
