Kirsten Dunst is heading up a new group of young Hollywood stars who will meet to discuss political issues and try and encourage their peers to take world issues more seriously.

The actress and boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal will front the celebrity forum, which plans to highlight the need for youths to get involved in politics to help make change possible.

Dunst admits the current war in Iraq prompted her to get more involved and bring likeminded actors and actresses together.

She says, "It's not that we're not patriotic, it's just that we don't want war." Dunst feels she's the perfect person to front the celebrity forum - because she was so apathetic she didn't even vote in the last election.

She adds, "I didn't even vote in 2000. I think it was just laziness. I wasn't raised in a family that was real political and I'm just now becoming aware of these issues. I just want to be more informed. This is so important and if we can get anyone to be more political, then that's a good thing."... [imdb.com 4.2.03]

After Harriet [her movie Harriet the Spy, 1996], I got phone calls from charities [that wanted me to join them]. I realized that if I was a role model, I wanted to show kids that you can be successful without getting high.

It escalated from there: I [joined] groups like Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) and Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving (RADD) and, in 1998, was chosen as a youth adviser [to help launch] the National Youth Anti-Drug Media campaign.

It was wonderful to talk directly to kids and tell them, "I got where I am without drugs or alcohol, and you can do the same." ...

I'd like to start my own charity, which would help underprivileged kids. There's hundreds of new charities coming out every day, but unless they have a lot of publicity, they're not going to get the attention that they deserve. It all starts with one person.

I started acting when I was about nine years old. I did theater -- my first job was playing young Cosette in the traveling production of Les Miserables... When [the Disney Channel's] Lizzie McGuire first became popular, all these kids would recognize me [as Lizzie's best friend, Miranda Sanchez], and I began seeing myself as a role model. ...

I started doing charity work when I was in Les Miz. We had this great teacher on tour, and he had us make these poetry books that we sold to the cast. We donated our profits to a children's hospital and visited the kids.

It was so sad: Some of them were so sick they weren't able to go to the playroom. But parents come up to me and tell me I'm like medicine for their children -- they get out of bed just to see me. So now I visit a hospital at least once a month. If I wasn't into acting, I'd want to be a nurse.

In 1993, before beginning her musical career, Jewel and I had a series of important discussions that clarified our mutual desire to make a difference. These discussions united us in a creative partnership to be of service to humanity and laid the foundation for the development of Jewel's career.
Our partnership encompasses the philosophical, ethical, and spiritual covenant that is an integral part of our lives and work. Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH) is the non-profit, humanitarian foundation that has grown out of our partnership.

In the spirit of giving back to the global community which provides us with such abundance, we choose to advocate values and principles that improve the human condition and foster the positive spiritual evolution of human awareness and action.

The last getup you'd expect wholesome animal advocate Alicia Silverstone
to wear is leather biker gear, but that's exactly what the film star sported at
a recent photo shoot -- well, not quite.

Her studded black cap and zippered vest are actually made of synthetic leather, or "pleather,"
and boast PETA's new accessory for the cruelty-free set: a patch that reads, "Fake, for the Animals' Sake."
