How Stress Symptoms Affect Brain Functions - by Carolyn Gross [posted on her site]
Chaos and fear are closely linked. When we shift into a panic state, we fuel the flames of chaos. ... What happens during stress and overload is that the attributes of the right brain become inaccessible, which means we lose our intuitiveness and imagination. The way to bridge back over to our holistic right brain is to find the calm in the midst of the storm.

emWave PC Stress Relief System

(formerly known as Freeze-Framer®)

Description from the Institute of HeartMath:

Much more than a heart monitor this revolutionary technology guides you on how to achieve higher, more creative energy levels, less stress, and optimal health.

HeartMath research has shown that emotions are reflected in our heart rhythm patterns.

The analysis of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), or heart rhythms, is recognized as a powerful, non-invasive measure that reflects heart-brain interactions and autonomic nervous system dynamics, which are particularly sensitive to changes in the emotional state.

..
..
emWave PC is a software and hardware program which collects pulse data through a finger or ear sensor which plugs into your computer. The program translates the information from your heart rhythms into user friendly graphics displayed on your computer screen.

    * Watch your heart rhythms in real time.
    * See how emotions affect your heart rhythms.
    * Discover which emotions you can activate to more effectively manage stress and boost vitality.

With emWave PC, you learn to build a buffer against stress by accessing a high performance state called "coherence." Coherence is a mental and emotional state that people experience when they are "in-sync" or in the "zone"--when the heart, brain and nervous system are working in harmony. Simply stated, more coherence equals more energy and less wear and tear from stress.

The Release Technique

The Abundance Course [image] includes the Release® Technique...

Highlights of Scientific Research
On The Release® Technique

Dr. Richard J. Davidson of the State University of New York in collaboration with Dr. David C. McClelland of Harvard University... found that the Release Technique "stands out far beyond the rest for its simplicity, efficiency, absence of questionable concepts and rapidity of observable results."

The scientific results support the experience of the many graduates who report that they are calmer in difficult situations after having learned the Release® Technique with repetitive observable results that get even better with time.

“Through the use of the Release Technique, I substantially lowered my blood pressure and under the direction of my physician, I was able to eliminate all medication. Today, my blood pressure is at 140/80. I continue to monitor its level daily, and with the help of the Release Technique I am able to keep it within the normal range.”

> Ed Lynch, New York

"In my experience, The Release Technique is simply the most effective way of reducing stress on both a personal and professional level. It constitutes a dramatic advance in the field of health and wellness."

Emotional Freedom Techniques / EFT

What is EFT? I hope this doesn't sound too grandiose, but I've been doing energy healing work since 1991 and my jaw still drops at the results. I've lost count of the number of phobias, panic/anxiety attacks, traumatic memories, guilt, grief and physical ailments that have been elegantly relieved by this procedure.

Even though EFT violates just about every conventional belief out there, the results remain remarkable. EFT isn't perfect, of course. We don't get 100%. But it usually works well and the results are sometimes spectacular. It often works where nothing else will."   Gary Craig

People suffering from anxiety disorders often have a physical overreaction to stress.

This overreaction occurs because your body perceives everyday events and situations as threats to survival. In an effort to protect you, your body triggers the fight or flight response even though no real danger exists.

There is some indication that an overreaction to stress is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, we don't know what initially causes this chemical imbalance.

Can I change it?: Yes. What's important to realize is that if you overreact to stress, you can learn to change it, no matter how it began.

You can learn deep breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, and techniques such as the Anxiety Pyramid (all included in our course) to train your body to react more calmly.

Omega oils are essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs are "good fats." They are vital in maintaining physical AND mental health. These polyunsaturated fats are involved in developing and maintaining the cells, the nerves, immune functions, energy production, inflammatory responses, and even mood.

With its higher dose of EPA [one of the essential fatty acids], I find this formula - Ultimate Omega EPA - especially helpful in maintaining my freedom from anxiety. ... Some experts estimate that Americans consume less than 15% of the amount of omega-3 needed for optimal functioning!

Energy vampires are people who suck our energy dry. Everyone can benefit from skills on how to cope with them.

You can especially benefit if you are an "intuitive empath" who absorbs the pain and negativity of others into your body, and become exhausted by it.

Our relationships are governed by a give and take of energy. Some people make us more electric or at ease. Yet others suck the life right out of us.

> from article Protect Yourself from Energy Vampires
by Judith Orloff, MD

We can't stop the negative circumstances of our time -- our cell phones will keep ringing, e-mails will keep coming, people will be rude, our children will be demanding, and bad things will happen in the world. But we can learn ways to protect our energy so that we can stay centered in dealing with the stresses that arise.

Convert bad stress into good stress just by thinking about it differently.

Instead of saying, "I feel so stressed out," you can say, "I am so excited about the chance to..."

Visualize perfection, such as your perfect vacation or a sweet victory. Athletes commonly consider the feeling of "butterflies in the stomach" to be an indication of excitement and anticipation, not stress.

Concentrate on improving your personal best, and don't worry about the rest. Get guidance if you need it.

Finally, remember that a single job activity is rarely "life or death." You are judged generally on patterns of behavior and your ability to deal honestly with problems.

Barry Schwartz. The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less
Publishers Weekly: Like Thoreau and the band Devo, psychology professor Schwartz provides ample evidence that we are faced with far too many choices on a daily basis... drawing extensively on his own work in the social sciences, Schwartz shows that a bewildering array of choices floods our exhausted brains, ultimately restricting instead of freeing us. ... Part research summary, part introductory social sciences tutorial, part self-help guide, this book offers concrete steps on how to reduce stress in decision making.

David Sobel, MD; Robert Ornstein, PhD.  The Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Handbook

Gene Wallenstein, PhD. Mind, Stress, and Emotions: The New Science of Mood
Reviewer: Stephanie Marr, M.D., Ph.D. (Berkeley, CA) - I heard about this book from a colleague (a psychologist) who has been recommending it to her patients. Like her, I found the book to be exceptional in every way - it is both fascinating and highly informative. The author has used a wide-ranging and richly integrative approach to the subject of human emotions, and the book is based on new research that has just been performed within the last five years or so. I was surprised by many of the more recent discoveries, particularly those that link childhood trauma to physiological changes in adult brain chemistry. Also exciting are the experiments that suggest new treatments for anxiety and affective disorders that emerge from these conditions. But even if readers are not interested in treatments, the book will be very engaging to those who simply want to grasp what modern science is now learning about human emotions. Overall, I highly recommend this book. It is written for the intelligent reader who wants to understand how different forms of stress alter immune function and emotions.

Highly sensitive people (HSPs), who make up some 20 percent of the population, are individuals who both enjoy and suffer from a finely tuned neurological system.

This condition can be a gift, but, until HSPs master their sensitive nervous systems, they operate in a constant state of overstimulation.

Conditions that most of us ignore completely overwhelm the HSP: bright light, loud sounds, and strong smells.

More importantly, HSPs are also very sensitive to their internal worlds. They tend to be deeply affected by pain, both emotional and physical.

The emotional demands of relationships and inevitable consequences of change often leave them reeling.

If you're a HSP, the most important thing you must learn is how to manage your increased volume of sensory experience, both physical and emotional stimulation. [amazon.com]
